PTTEP Australasia has announced drilling of a relief well to stop the flow of oil, gas and water from the Montara well has commenced.

The Montara well has been leaking into the Timor Sea since mid-August 2009.

Drilling is expected to be complete early in the week beginning 4 October 2009. Following that, sophisticated electro magnetic ranging tools will be used to intersect the existing well, which will be plugged with heavy mud to stop the flow of oil and gas.

A PTTEP Australasia spokesman said the leaking oil, gas and water would be fixed as early as 13 October 2009.
