Oil and gas drilling operations to be amped up in QLD

THE QUEENSLAND Premier, Anna Bligh has opened the first of two regional offices of oil and gas exploration and production company Santos in Gladstone.

The State Government says the development will help create and sustain jobs during the economic crisis.

The authority claims it has been working hard with companies like Santos to facilitate and develop the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry which present the opportunity to develop a whole new export industry for Queensland.

The government has declared a dedicated LNG State Development Area on Curtis Island and facilitation of a pipeline corridor to the Surat Basin.

Santos’ Chief Executive Officer David Knox says the opening is an endorsement of its confidence in the business environment in the state as the development of the Queensland’s coal seam gas industry continues.

The government has also established a specialist LNG Industry Unit in the Office of the Coordinator-General. The unit will be a single point of entry into government for companies investing in this new industry.

It will be supported by an executive group of Directors-General from relevant departments including Infrastructure and Planning, Mines and Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The Premier says the government is determined to get the new industry off the ground, create jobs, build prosperity and keep Queensland strong.Planned construction of the second Santos plant located at Roma is due to commence in the first half of 2010.
